To promote the knowledge of national monuments, it was a periodical of the Archaeological Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, which was published in 22 volumes between 1859 and 1899.

Its editor-in-chief from 1864 to 1873 was Flóris Rómer, and from 1885 onwards, József Hampel.
